Further discussion on inequitable school funding

Inequity in school funding remains a hot topic. Both the recent boycott in Chicago and the Chicago Urban League lawsuit against the State of Illinois have brought the issue to public attention in a big way.

Golden Apple Fellow Cheryl Chapman points out some of the economic realities in a well-researched piece. For example, Illinois ranks fifth among the states in the size of its economy, but is 42nd in spending. Same-sex classes growing in number nationally

The number of schools that offer same-sex programs has grown in the last few years. The dozens or so programs of a few years ago have expanded to hundreds of programs today.

School funding in Illinois generates suggested boycott, lawsuit

A State Senator is suggesting a boycott on the opening day of schools in Chicago and the Chicago Urban League is suing the State of Illinois. All of this is over inequities in school funding which place Illinois 49th out of the 50 states

Energy costs are affecting our schools

Today, the Associated Press published an article which expands on the effects that high energy prices are having on schools all over the country. It’s not just school bus fuel that is impacting school costs. Electricity for air conditioning, heating oil, even delivery costs for cafeteria food are going up along with diesel fuel for the buses.

One Million ISAT exams to be regraded.

Wide fluctuations between previous ISAT scores and this year’s results have forced state officials to okay a “recount” Close to one million elementary reading and math exams will be rescored.
